This is a 1938 Zenith 12 tube model 12S232 commonly call a “Walton”, Zenith’s most famous and collectable year. It is sporting the fabulous “Motor Drive Robot Shutter Dial” and a green tuning eye tube. This is the largest table radio Zenith ever made with a motor, shutters and a green eye tube. It is a striking radio from top to bottom. Zenith made four different chassis to fit into this style cabinet (7J232, 7S232, 9S232 & 12S232).

Cabinet: The cabinets’ book matched walnut veneer is beautifully restored with a lacquer finish and toned lacquer color trim. Every effort was made to reproduce the cabinets’ original look as it came from the factory. Wood repairs were made as necessary. The grille cloth is a reproduction of the original 1938 pattern.

Dial/Knobs: The Zenith "Black Dial" is in good condition as is the dial glass. The shutters move very nice, and the motor drives the tuner in both directions with ease. The white pointer and the brass second hand move nicely around the dial. The original Zenith wood knobs are also present. No reproductions.

Electronics/Chassis/Cord: The 12 tube Superheterodyne chassis is a performer and plays full dial scale, loud and clear. An audio jack was installed so you can play music from an audio source, such as your cell phone. The radio has had a complete recap electronic restoration, all the electrolytic caps were replaced with new production parts. All the wax paper foil capacitors were replaced as well. All original tube shields are in place. The dial belts are new and smooth moving for motor operation and tuning. The radio has very nice reception with no hum. The green eye tube is a new 6E5 tube. An outside antenna is necessary on old tube radios or a long wire. A new power cord was installed for safety. For the radio collector wanting a Walton with all the correct stamps and number markings in all the correct places... This radio does not have all the matching number stamps on the chassis, speaker or cabinet. The cabinet was a 9S232, the chassis is 1938 12 tube chassis 1204. The speaker is 1940 8” zenith speaker that has the correct 670ohm field coil. So, if you’re looking for a number matching Walton radio... This radio is not for you. But if you want a Walton, and you want a 12 tuber and you do not care about number markings… Here it is…
